Steven Universe: Save The Light SDCC Trailer Shows Mario RPG Battles And New Characters

Back in March it was revealed that the popular Cartoon Network series Steven Universe would be getting its first console RPG, and at this year's San Diego Comic-Con more details and a new trailer for the game were shared.

The Steven Universe: Save the Light SDCC 2017 trailer, which you can check out, above, provides a nice look at the game's battle system, which appears to be strongly inspired by Paper Mario and other Mario RPGs. We also get a peek at some characters we haven't seen before, including Peridot, Squaridot (a new villain exclusive to the game), and various fusion characters like Stevonnie (Steven and Connie), Opal (Amethyst and Pearl) and Sardonyx (Garnet and Pearl).

For those who don't keep up with animation, Steven Universe follows the titular character and the adventures he gets into with the Crystal Gems, a group of ageless (and awesome) alien warriors that protect humanity from various threats. The show has received tons of acclaim for it's beautiful character designs, inclusive storylines, and generally being pretty darn cute. Steven Universe is one of those rare shows that's actually acceptable for kids, but won't make you want to blow your brains out.

Here's how the PlayStation Blog describes the game's plot:

Save the Light begins when a mysterious warrior arrives in Beach City and steals a powerful weapon, and then it's up to the Crystal Gems to embark on the magical mission to end all magical missions. Steven and the Gems must travel far beyond Beach City, battle an army of creepy creatures, and stop a no-good Prism-snatcher in order to Save the Light!

Steven Universe: Save the Light arrives sometime this summer for Xbox One and PS4. The developers have said further platforms may be considered down the line.
