31 Years Ago Today, Sony Changed the Video Game Console Wars Forever

The console wars looked incredibly different back then, with many of the big names we know today not being as popular as they are. There were even consoles that no longer exist today, such as the Sega Dreamcast. But Sony completely redefined the console wars 31 years ago when it launched its new console. Sony offered something different from other consoles, and it proved to be a major success, so much so that it shut down other console developers and caused others to take notice and make changes to their own consoles.

The PlayStation launched in North America on September 9th, 1995. What made it stand out was the inclusion of CD-ROM technology and 3D graphics, something no other console was able to match at the time. Not only this, but the timing itself was crucial, as Sony was able to steal the thunder from both Nintendo and Sega. Through aggressive pricing, distinctive marketing, strong third-party support, and games that demonstrated what 3D gaming could become, the PlayStation established itself as one of the most successful consoles of all time.

The PlayStation Redefined What a Console Could Be

The original PlayStation was built around technology that separated it from many of its competitors. Sony chose CD-ROM as its primary game format instead of cartridges, giving developers substantially more storage space while reducing manufacturing costs. Sony’s own corporate history notes that CDs could also be produced and supplied much faster than traditional ROM cartridges. This proved to be a major proponent in the console’s success.

The PlayStation arrived at a moment when 3D graphics were becoming one of the industry’s biggest ambitions. It utilized real-time 3D worlds, while its 32-bit architecture provided developers with hardware designed for increasingly complex graphics. Not only this, but Sony paired the console’s new technology with a new controller design that would become iconic and influence future PlayStation controllers.

The PlayStation looked and felt different from the toy-like image traditionally associated with video game hardware. This made it more appealing to gamers and helped pushed all its new features into mainstream attention. The PlayStation would put Sony on the map like none of its previous projects did, and today, the PlayStation 5 has become one of the most popular consoles even in light of the controversies Sony faces.

Hardware is not alone in why Sony changed the console wars. The games available on the PlayStation also played a huge role in its domination. arly titles such as Ridge Racer demonstrated the appeal of fast 3D arcade racing, while Tekken brought Namco’s 3D fighting experience from arcades into living rooms. Wipeout added another identity to the growing library with futuristic racing, weapons, speed, and a distinctive soundtrack.

But no game would prove as influential as Final Fantasy VII, which would go on to become one of the greatest games of all time. Additional games like Gran Turismo and Resident Evil 2 helped established a varied library that made the PlayStation appeal to many different types of gamers. These are only a small portion of the incredible games that fans could find on the PlayStation, and this library would only grow with time.

That diversity became one of the defining strengths of the PS1 era. Racing games, fighting games, role-playing games, action games, horror games, and experimental titles could all find an audience on the same machine. Sony did not allow itself to be shoehorned into a single genre or type of game, but drew in gamers from all angles. Without this enormous and varied library, the PlayStation could never have found the success it had.

Sony’s success was not simple built on the PlayStation alone, but a series of factors. It came from combining hardware, software, pricing, distribution, and marketing at exactly the right moment. Price point was also incredibly important, as its $299 undercut its competitors. That gave Sony an immediate competitive advantage while also making the new system easier for consumers to consider.

Sony’s corporate history states that the first 100,000 PlayStation units sold rapidly, followed by one million units within roughly six months. By the end of November 1996, the console had reached 10 million units sold. These impressive numbers solidified Sony’s position in the console wars, which was is impressive considering this was the studio’s first real home console.

This success would continue with the PlayStation 2, 3, 4, and 5, with many predicting the PlayStation 6 to be a major hit as well. Sony has also continued its development of software, with franchises like God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, and more being some of the most beloved today. But it all started on September 9, 1995. The PlayStation would be the beginning of Sony’s transformation into one of gaming’s defining companies.
