Age of Empires 4 to Challenge Players With New Persistent Progression Roguelite Mode

Age of Empires 4 has had an excellent selection of content since its release, and the newest Dynasties of the East expansion, which will release on November 4th, is no exception. The development team has already revealed that a healthy addition of new units, civilizations, and maps is coming to the game. Now, new details have been showcased about one of the updatesโ€™ more interesting additions, dubbed โ€œThe Crucible.โ€

A new blog post on the Age of Empires website documented some of the cool new features coming to โ€œThe Crucible,โ€ the RTS series’ first official roguelite mode. The mode offers players an intense and customizable challenge, requiring them to survive an onslaught of enemies that come in waves to destroy a wonder. The description of The Crucible revealed that it will be a fully fleshed-out experience, complete with selectable boons, randomized encounters, and persistent progression for players to work towards between each new run. The latest update will be available for both PC and consoles, thanks to the game being released on the Xbox a couple of years back, and soon for PlayStation 5 starting November 4th.

The Crucible Looks Like It Will Add Hours of Fun

All of the right pieces appear to be in place for The Crucible to add an immense amount of replayability for Age fans as they work toward unlocking upgrades and pushing the limits through eight different difficulty settings, as well as a special โ€œconquerors modeโ€ that only unlocks on the highest difficulties.

Players will be tasked with surviving 45 minutes against an unending onslaught of enemies that gets progressively harder over time. Based on how long the player survives, they can earn medals and perk points, which can be spent on permanent upgrades to improve their future chances. Someone could also choose to stay past the 45-minute time limit in โ€œEndless Mode,โ€ if they have a really good run that they donโ€™t want to end. While the primary objective will be to protect the wonder, players will also have optional objectives and points of interest to check out that grant various rewards across the four confirmed scenario maps that support The Crucible.

As an Age of Empires fan who has played variant maps and mods that go for a similar vibe, I am excited about what the team has advertised for this official roguelite mode. The 45-minute time limit feels reasonable, as roguelite games are more enjoyable when played in one sitting. Some of the ones with longer playtimes often struggle to avoid feeling bloated by the end. Players can also leave early and still get rewards, minimizing the amount of bad runs that might feel like a waste of time. Giving players a purpose when they have an urge to fire up a computer opponent game is especially appealing to me, which is helped by the persistent progression unlocks.

Now, persistent progression in roguelite/roguelike games can be a divisive issue among fans of the genre. However, I generally donโ€™t feel like someone who doesnโ€™t like persistent progression is in a worse spot just because the system exists. If you arenโ€™t a fan of this kind of system in a roguelite, you donโ€™t even have to engage with it in this case, as the developers specifically mention that you can turn various earned perks off if you so desire.

What do you think about this new roguelite mode coming to Age of Empires 4? This year has been excellent for roguelites so far, with the release of Elden Ring: Nighreign and smaller projects like The King Is Watching and Astral Throne. An official roguelite mode for Age of Empires feels exactly like something that I didnโ€™t know I was waiting for, but am glad is on the way.
