Battlefield 6 Server Browser & XP Progression Explained

We’ve gotten a behind the scenes look at how Battlefield 6‘s server browser actually works. With just two weeks to go until the release of Battlefield 6, it is almost overwhelming how much news there has been about the game. I recently went hands-on with Battlefield 6‘s campaign, allowing me to get a good sense of the what the team is building for single player fans. I also got a taste of the biggest map in the game last week, giving me a better idea of the kind of variety we will get in our levels in the full game. EA is clearly pulling out all the stops to keep people informed and interested about the game and it seems to be working.

However, many people have had a lot of questions about how the server browser will be implemented in Battlefield 6‘s multiplayer. Will it offer full XP and progression? Will there be official servers? Are they persistent? There’s a lot of question marks around this and they’re all really important questions as they can help dictate the sustainability of Battlefield 6 for years to come. Thankfully, I have plenty of answers for you!

Battlefield 6‘s Server Browser Explained

Battlefield Studios invited me to a presentation to explain how Battlefield Portal works in Battlefield 6 and while there’s much to discuss with the feature as a whole, the most popular subject centers around server browsers. Yes, there is a server browser in Battlefield 6 and yes, it exists within Battlefield Portal. However, unlike 2042, Portal’s experiences aren’t buried underneath layers of menus. This browser will be front and center on the main menu of the game so players can quickly and easily find it. From there, you’ll be able to find any kind of game that you want or even start your own.

Every person who owns a copy of Battlefield 6 will be allowed to have their own persistent server. That means you can set up a server with whatever rules and maps you want and it will be available to everyone, even if you’re not online. Your servers remain active regardless of if you’re actually on Battlefield 6 which is huge and will ensure there are always plenty of servers to choose from.

If you’re looking to utilize Portal in order to rank up and earn progression in Battlefield 6, you’re in luck. You will be able to progress in any server in Battlefield Portal. If you’re playing on a server with that is more akin to the traditional Battlefield experience but with slight modifiers like 24/7 Rush, you will earn full XP and progression, no strings attached. There’s no asterisk here, it will be treated like a standard match you would’ve played in regular matchmaking. However, there is a bit of a catch for servers with more whacky game types.

If you’re playing a more custom server with highly modified rules, something that doesn’t fit within the typical Battlefield mold like a parkour server or a player-created horde mode, you will still earn XP, but just a bit differently. In these more experimental modes, you’ll generate XP for the time you’ve played instead of every kill or objective that you’ve accomplished. If you’re worried about accidentally stumbling into the wrong kind of server, Battlefield Studios has ensured that each server will be appropriately labeled in the browser based on what kind of XP you’ll generate from it so there’s no confusion or disappointment.

The last and probably biggest question to address is whether or not there are official servers in the server browser. Official servers ensure that players can’t kick you to make room for their friends or otherwise create inconveniences for people just trying to play the game. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a definitive answer on this, but was told that there will be more clarity on this topic closer to launch. It does seem evident that the developers are listening to feedback on how to build the server browser at least, though. Perhaps if official servers aren’t in there at launch, they could come later, especially if fans keep demanding them.

Battlefield 6 will release on October 10th for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
