At E3 2017, upcoming PS4-exclusive zombie survival game Days Gone was once again a big focus of Sony‘s press conference. The game got a lengthy 10-minute demo at the show, and now Sony and developer SIE Bend Studio (Syphon Filter, Uncharted: Golden Abyss) have revealed a very different side of that demo. You can check out the alternate playthrough, above.

In the Days Gone E3 demo, our protagonist Deacon sets off in search of somebody called Manny, who got lost on a supply run. The original version of the demo took place at night in the rain, and saw Deacon get ambushed early, leading to a lot of straight-ahead action. Well, it turns out you can also take a more subtle approach.

In this alternate playthrough of the Days Gone demo, it’s now daytime and snowing. The snow effects the way your bike handles, so watch out, but it being day is mostly a benefit as the zombified “Freakers” are less active when the sun is out. The daytime setting also means Deacon can see the ambush coming, sneak around behind the bad guys, and take them out. Generally speaking, this is a stealthier take on the challenge, with Deacon using traps, a sniper rifle, and his “Survival Vision” to eliminate enemies. Of course, all stealth goes out the window once the zombified grizzly bear shows up.

Days Gone has struggled somewhat to define itself amongst the countless other zombie games already on the market, but its combination of openness and triple-A production values could set it apart. It’s clear Sony has a lot of confidence in the game, so hopefully Days Gone ends up delivering a unique experience.

Days Gone arrives exclusively on the PlayStation 4 sometime in first half of 2018.
