The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an outstanding game – perhaps one of the best games in the series to date. But you can’t help but something’s missing, as you’re pretty much taking on the full adventure by your lonesome. So what would happen if you were able to bring a friend along for the ride? That’s what a few devoted players are hoping to find out.
As you may have read a while back, a Wii U emulator enables players to enjoy that version of Breath of the Wild from the pleasure of their PC. But now some devotees are taking that version and trying to mod it with some form of co-op support.

According to the group’s Discord, the project is still very early in development, according to Fooni, who serves as a member of the emulator community that works with the Wii U version. The game wasn’t really intended to support multiplayer, so you can only imagine all the hoops the team is having to jump through to set it up. In fact, it’s not likely that we’ll see the mod reach completion for at least another year, and perhaps longer beyond that.
That said, the team has done some pretty good stuff thus far through the Wii U emulator, nicknamed Cemu. Modders have been able to make a non-playable character in the game fully functional by opening two clients at once, and then changing the second model to Link. By adding in the first Link with that, it seems that two adventurers are able to jump into the game at once. It’s a neat trick, and thus far, it seems to be working. An early screenshot showing off the progress can be found below.
That said, the team still has many challenges to overcome, namely with inventory. Not to mention there’s the big boot of Nintendo, who could squash not only the project flat, but also the emulator, since it’s not too fond of pirating. But the team will continue at it for as long as it can, and, hopefully, we’ll see it come to fruition.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now for Wii U and Nintendo Switch.
