The legendary gear is available right now for seven characters, but you won’t be able to buy them or unlock them from random mother boxes. You’re going to have to earn these puppies (more on that later), and we’ll let you know how in a second.
There won’t be entire sets of legendary gear, instead, every single character will have one piece of legendary gear, and it’s always the accessory. Accessories are always reserved for the character’s most defining piece of equipment; think Batman’s utility belt, Dex-Starr for Atrocitus, and Wonder Woman’s Sword and Shield.
What does legendary gear do?
Every piece of legendary gear will have incredible stats, and these will never be random. Legendary gear has fixed stats, so every single legendary sword and shield for Wonder Woman is going to be the same, so no one will have to worry about working their butts off for a legendary piece of gear only to find out that their buddy has a better one.
In addition to their astronomical stats, the each piece of legendary gear will have a game-changing x-stat modifier. Take Wonder Woman as an example. Usually her character power gives her one random buff, but with her legendary gear equipped, she’ll get two buffs activated at the same time. Blue Beetle’s legendary gear will allow you to use his spikes and his projectile at the same time. Batman’s legendary utility belt will give him a triple jump, and Swamp Thing’s gear will give him an air dash.
Every character will have a significant boost like this.
How do you get legendary gear?
Legendary Gear is going to be extremely difficult to unlock. A while back NetherRealm Studios added legendary multiverse events to the game, and in this section of challenges you should find the first seven legendary gear events. Every single character will have his or her own multiverse event for this unique gear, and they will never expire.
In order grab your fancy new loot, you’re going to have to complete the events and fulfill all of their requirements. There are many requirements, and some of them are going to take you a very long time. If you really want Batman’s belt, you’re going to have to prove that you’re a beast with Batman by winning so many matches, ending so many rounds with a specific move, completing certain challenge events, spending so many credits, leveling him up, etc.
NetherRealm let us know several times that this isn’t the kind of thing that will happen any time soon. You’re going to have to do some serious grinding. Don’t worry, though, you’ll be unlocking diamond motherboxes along the way!
Green Arrow’s Hood and Black Manta’s Gear
But this stream was supposed to be all about Black Manta, remember? We got to see some fantastic Black Manta gameplay, and as it turns out, Black Manta is a fantastic mid-range fighter with some interesting defensive techniques. You’ll have to go back and watch the stream if you want some great combo openers and tips, but toward the end of the show, NetherRealm showed off some alternate gear for Black Manta. He looks amazing:
Here’s another getup that shows a thicker, more majestic-looking set of threads if you’re tired of playing the villain:
And take heart, Green Arrow mains! You guys are going to get your hood after all. Tyler Lansdown, NetherRealm’s community boss, revealed that when he hinted at Green Arrow’s hood long ago that it was an honest mistake. There was never a hood. Since the community has persisted in its pleading (read: whining), the team at NetherRealm has decided to add a hood to the game, which is currently in the works! We don’t know when it’s coming, but it’s coming!
