SNK hasn't been releasing as many fighting games as it was back in the Neo-Geo heyday. We're talking about stuff like King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Art of Fighting, World Heroes, Garou: Mark of the Wolves and more. Granted, it has been re-releasing its classic games for players to enjoy on new systems, but that's not quite the same as getting some fresh blood in the fighting ring.
That could very well be the case. While speaking with IGN, King of Fighters director Yasuyuki Oda noted that the developer isn't leaning on just one fighting franchise these days. In fact, it has several games in the works.
He noted, "We are developing many new fighting games that we can't reveal yet, but we'd like you to stay tuned."
There are several possibilities when it comes to new fighting games from the company. One that immediately comes to mind is Samurai Shodown, a series that gained critical acclaim back in the Neo-Geo days, with the last release being Samurai Shodown Sen on the Xbox 360. We're due for a new one, especially if it can be done in a similar style to King of Fighters XIV.
For that matter, we'll also take another Garou if we can get it.
SNK has remained devoted to its fighting brands, having produced The King of Fighters: Destiny animated series to promote the game, as well as the forthcoming mobile release The King of Fighters: World. So the publisher definitely has the resources when it comes to producing an awesome new fighting game.
PlayStation Experience and Tokyo Game Show are both right around the corner, so it's probably a matter of time before SNK announces something that's coming down the pipeline for 2018. In the meantime, at least we have King of Fighters XIV to enjoy, as well as the countless Neo-Geo fighting games that are available for Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Time to load up and enjoy the classics!
King of Fighters XIV is available now for PlayStation 4 and PC.
