We first heard about the return of the pink puffball Kirby at E3 just a few months ago, when Nintendo confirmed that he had a new adventure in the works for Nintendo Switch. But during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, we got a better idea of what kind of game is coming – and more importantly, when it’s coming.

During the special, Nintendo revealed that Kirby: Star Allies will be making its way to the Switch early next year. It still has a lot of conventional gameplay we’ve come to expect from the Kirby franchise, but there are a few new twists that will keep things interesting.

As you might guess from the name of the game, Kirby isn’t taking this adventure on his own. He’s actually able to team up with a few allies to help him along, either played by the AI or other players. Up to three allies can join him, meaning that the game has full-on four-player co-op support.

What’s more, you can combine Allies’ capabilities to create unique effects, such as creating a stone urn that can rise up into the air (with the help of your ESP capabilities), only to come crashing down on any obstacles and enemies that may be standing in your path.

There are other puzzles that you’ll need to solve as well, but the game is built with all ages in mind, so there should be no challenge too great for you and your friends.

That said, Nintendo still hasn’t notified us whether Kirby Star Allies will be more of a local multiplayer experience, or whether you’ll be able to play online with others. Guess we’ll have to wait a little bit longer before they confirm that specific detail.

Regardless, it’s great to see Kirby back in action, along with his new 3DS adventure that’s in the works as well. It just goes to show that Nintendo and HAL Laboratory are finding great new ideas for the iconic hero, and he doesn’t appear close to filling up anytime soon.

We’ll see how Kirby Star Allies stacks up when it releases for the Nintendo Switch in spring 2018!
