A new League of Legends Keystone Rune has been revealed, and this one looks to be a strong option for casters and control mages looking to add a bit of extra damage to their abilities by way of a massive fireball.

The new Keystone Rune, aptly named Meteor, is one of the runes that will replace the Keystone Masteries in the upcoming Runes Reforged system. Meteor deals AOE damage to enemies after landing an ability on them and scales off of champion level, AD, AP, and has a fairly low cooldown. Below is the current tooltip for the mastery:

“Damaging a champion with an ability hurls a meteor at their location. If the meteor hits them it deals bonus damage [40-100, based on your level +0.2AP and 0.2 bonus AD]. Cooldown: 20 – 8 seconds.”

Referencing another Keystone Rune in the Sorcery tree that was recently revealed called Perxie, Riot Gregab compared the two abilities by saying that Perxie would deal more consistent damage operating much like Lulu’s Pix while Meteor offers a bigger burst as well as the chance to dodge the ability completely. Seeing how Perxie deals less damage overall but also has the ability to shield allies, it looks like an obvious choice for supports while Meteor will be better suited for mid laners.

“Perxie sacrifices some raw damage for versatility,” Riot Gregab said. “When you shield an ally with it, you give up its bonus damage until the pet returns. Whereas Meteor, on the other hand, is all damage.”

The visual effects of the new Keystone Rune aren’t finalized yet, and Gregab noted that the fireball effect that’s currently in place is very much a temporary one and will be updated before the system is released. Another Riot Games employee, Riot Sparkle, also confirmed that this rune is not meant to be a replacement for Thunderlord’s Decree and isn’t related to the mastery.

As indicated in another gif that came with the post that showed Lux landing a Light Binding on an enemy, mages with CC should have an easier time landing this ability. It’ll work across the map as well with abilities like Jinx’s Super Mega Death Rocket and Karthus’ Requiem with a faster travel speed that’ll account for long-distance abilities, and a fiery icon showed hovering near Syndra lets enemies know when the ability is ready.
