Netflix is developing and producing a new drama series based on The Witcher. While we’re all familiar with The Witcher trilogy, which has smitten millions of fans across multiple platforms over the years, the Netflix series will be based on the source work: the eight-book fantasy saga by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Sapkowski himself doesn’t earn any revenue from The Witcher games, but he will be serving as creative consultant on the Netflix series, so we can expect his influence to be much more direct and profound.b

“Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar,” said Erik Barmack, Netflix Vice President, international series. “We couldn’t be more excited about bringing Netflix members around the world.” “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing,” said Sapkowski. “I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”
According to the press release, Sean Daniel (The Mummy, Ben-Hur, The Expanse) and Jason Brown (The Expanse) will be executive producing the series along with Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko. Baginski is the man responsible for directing the stunning opening cinematics for The Witcher games, and he will be directing at least one episode of each season of the Netflix series.
We look forward to this series for the same reason we love the games. The Witcher universe is dark and mature, full of characters who wear their humanity (or what’s left of it) on their sleeves. Though our characters live in a fantasy setting, they contend with many of the same political and ethical issues that plague us in the real world, and they do that with no shortage of humor.
“The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world,” said Sean Daniel and Jason Brown. “The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”
We’ll update you as soon as we learn more.
