A Nintendo Switch exclusive game from 2018 is returning with a new remaster, and this new remaster is releasing next month on October 3. And with the remaster, the Nintendo Switch game is shedding its exclusivity and going multi-platform, releasing on — in addition to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 — PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Meanwhile, not only is this remaster pitched as “massively upgraded,” but an “expanded version of the game.”

The Nintendo Switch exclusive game in question is Castle of Heart, which is returning on October 3, seven years later, as Castle of Heart: Retold. If you have never heard of Castle of Heart, it may be because it was not received that well back in 2018, as evidenced by its Metacritic score in the 50s. It is available right now on the Nintendo eShop for $14.99, which is how much the remaster is going to cost when it releases.
About the Game
Castle of Heart, aka the original game, is a side-scrolling adventure game where players play as a cursed knight attempting to rescue a priestess who has been captured by an evil sorcerer who rules over your land in tyrannical fashion. The remaster, specifically, promises new animations, improved lighting, new character models, more detailed environments, new remixed music, rebalanced combat and platforming, improved player interface, more responsive controls, and smoother gameplay. In short, the remaster is a complete overhaul of the game, though it’s still noy classified as a remake.
“Don’t know the original, but looks like a lot of work went into this,” reads one of the comments on the trailer for the new remaster. “Thought it was going to be a 3D souls-like, but I’m a lot more interested in the side-scrolling style. Visuals are stunning.”
Another comment adds: “Looks interesting. Side-scrollers are pretty refreshing. Totally not what I was expecting.”
A Random Remaster
It’s pretty interesting — and random — that developer 7Levels is returning to this release seven years later after it did not do so well the first time. Clearly, though, there was some level of consumer engagement, or the financial decision to bring this one back would not make any sense. Whatever the case, while random, it’s good to see this Switch exclusive returning after Nintendo announced it was removing another exclusive from the eShop alongside a couple of classic games.
It is worth noting that developer 7Levels has seemingly improved since the release of the original. While its most recent game — 2024’s Kong: Survivor — didn’t light the world on fire or impress everyone, it has far more positive user reviews and critical reviews than the original Castle of Heart.
