Say, friend, are you a fan of quirky real-time strategy games featuring adorable multicolored ant men? Of course, you are! Well, I’ve got some good news for you – it turns out Pikmin 4, which was announced back in 2015 by Shigeru Miyamoto himself, is still in the works for Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, Miyamoto’s not allowed to talk about it.

Here’s what the legendary designer had to say to Eurogamer about the state of the project

“I’ve been told not to share anything about this from PR, but I can tell you Pikmin 4 is progressing.”

As mentioned, Miyamoto somewhat randomly revealed the existence of Pikmin 4 back in early 2015. At the time, Miyamoto made it sound like the game was pretty much ready to go. Here’s the 2015 statement:

“We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development, but that is all we can confirm at present. It’s actually very close to completion. Pikmin teams are always working on the next one.”

This was surprising news, as the waits between Pikmin games tend to be excruciatingly long (there was a gap of nine years between Pikmin 2 in 2004 and Pikmin 3 in 2013). Hardcore Nintendo fans prepared themselves to return to Miyamoto’s dangerous digital gardens, but then…nothing happened.

Nintendo never followed up on Miyamoto’s surprise announcement in any way. This latest Miyamoto one-line statement is the only update of any substance we’ve received. Given the timing of Miyamoto’s original reveal, it seems likely Pikmin 4 was originally intended to be a late Wii U game, but ultimately got moved to the Nintendo Switch. I’m not thrilled about not being able to play Pikmin 4 right now, but the series is pretty much a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch. Hopefully we don’t have to wait two more years for another single-sentence Miyamoto update on the game.
