Players might have a little more difficulty catching Mewtwo in Pokemon Go than previously believed. While Mewtwo has a base capture rate of six percent, which makes it much easier to catch than the other Legendary Pokemon in the game, some players are having issues capturing Mewtwo due to its unique attack animation.

Every Pokemon has an attack animation, a short window in which they’re temporarily immune to Poke Ball throws. Any player who hits a Pokemon during the attack animation will watch their Poke Ball bounce uselessly away. This becomes especially problematic when trying to capture a Raid Boss, since players only have a limited amount of Premier Balls to use to capture the Pokemon.
While Mewtwo can’t float around like the Legendary Birds could, its attack animation is tricking players up, causing them to throw away valuable Premier Balls and lower their chances of capturing it.
Mewtwo’s Tricky Attack Animation
Mewtwo’s attack animation is deceptively simple. At first glance, it looks like Mewtwo simply takes a backhanded swat at the player before lowering its arm and becoming vulnerable to a Poke Ball throw. However, Mewtwo’s attack animation lasts for several seconds afterย Mewtwo lowers its arm, which means it still can’t be caught.
Mewtwo’s extended attack animation is especially screwy for players who try to time their Poke Ball throws for immediately after a Pokemon finishes their attacks. Unless a player waits an extra two seconds or so to toss their Poke Ball, they’ll likely not connect with the throw and lose out on a chance to catch Mewtwo.
The Solution
Players who have participated in Mewtwo Raids recommend one of two solutions to catching Mewtwo. If players insist on trying to time their throws, they should hone their instincts to wait that extra couple of seconds. Mewtwo might look vulnerable after it lowers its arm, but it’s really daring players to throw away a Premier Ball.
The other trick is to hold down on the Poke Ball when Mewtwo attacks. The familiar “ring” that shows players where to aim disappears during attack animations and will reappear when the catch window for Mewtwo re-opens. Players who rely on the ring reappearing won’t be able to time their throws, but it’s a much safer option for those worried about throwing Poke Balls away. It also allows players to get a feel for Mewtwo’s attack animation length so they can eventually time their throws like with other Raid Bosses.
Since players will likely have limited chances to catch Mewtwo due to it being an EX Raid Boss, players won’t want to waste their Premier Balls due to a silly timing issue. Hopefully, players will take their time and maximize their chances of success to catch this rare and powerful Pokemon.
