Last weekend, Pokemon Go held its first ever mini-event – a weekend “bloom” of Grass-Type Pokemon. Despite anecdotes of Grass-Type Pokemon not spawning in arid or urban areas, it still seems that the event succeeded in putting a lot of Pokemon in the hands of trainers.

Yesterday, Pokemon Go released some stats about the event, noting that trainers caught over 290 million Grass-Type Pokemon during the event. Interestingly, Pokemon Go broke out how many Grass-Type Pokemon each team caught, with Team Mystic coming away with the most Pokemon.

According to Pokemon Go, Team Mystic players caught 116 million Grass-Type Pokemon, Team Valor caught 102 million Grass-Type Pokemon, and Team Instinct caught a mere 72 million. Those stats roughly coordinate with the overall distribution of players between the teams: Team Mystic makes up about 40% of all Pokemon Go players, Team Valor is about 35%, and Team Instinct trails in third with only 25% of players.

Although the stats themselves aren’t surprising, it’s interesting to see Pokemon Go play up the team rivalry aspect of the game. Pokemon Go hasn’t done much with inter-team competition in months, even though the teams had a fierce rivalry during the Pokemon Go craze last summer. With a revamped gym system on its way, it’s possible that Pokemon Go is trying to rekindle those competitive sparks in order to get more players interested in trying to beat rival teams as gameplay heats up for the summer.
