Pokemon Go‘s upcoming Halloween Event has a pretty cool reference to some of the Pokemon franchise’s most recent games.

Earlier this weekend, dataminers uncovered evidence in a new update that Pokemon Go was about to add some new “Gen 3” Pokemon first seen in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. While a lot of focus was on the new Pokemon, a lot of fans missed an Easter egg hidden in the event’s loading screen.
The loading screen (seen below) shows a group of Ghost and Dark-Type Pokemon standing on top of a hill as a Pokemon Go player seemingly ignores them because the trainer is on their phone. The trainer appears to be wearing a hat designed after Mimikyu, a Ghost-Type Pokemon that didn’t appear in games until Pokemon Sun and Moon‘s release last year.

If we had to take a guess, we’d bet that Pokemon Go players can wear the Mimikyu hat as an in-game accessory, similar to the Magikarp hat or “Adventure cap” from previous events.
Who is Mimikyu?
Mimikyuย is an unusual Pokemon in that we don’t actually know its true form. The curious Pokemon wears a cobbled together Pikachu costume as it wishes to be loved just like Pikachu. No one has ever seen Mimikyu’sย true form, although ribbon-like claws will occasionally peek out from under its costume to attack other Pokemon.ย Mimikyuย is one ofย Pokemon Sun and Moon‘s more popular Pokemon, in part because it’s the perfect combination of creepy and cute.
Mimikyuย is also a featured Pokemon inย Pokemon the Series: Sun and Moon, where it has an intense rivalry with Pikachu. The anime’sย Mimikyuย (which belongs to Team Rocket’s Jessie)ย seems envious of Pikachu’s popularity and viciously attacks Pikachuย whenever it can.ย
Just an Easter Egg
Whileย Pokemon Goย tossed a Mimikyuย reference into the Halloween event, don’t expect to see the Pokemon actually appear in the game. While there’s plenty of code related to the “Gen 3” Pokemon in the new Pokemon Goย update, there’s no evidence thatย Pokemon Goย is ready to release Mimikyuย into the game…yet.
Sadly, Mimikyuย is a “Gen 7” Pokemon, so we might have to wait several more years before it’s actually running around inย Pokemon Go. However, it’s still pretty cool thatย Pokemon Goย is referencing newer Pokemon, which could mean more tie-ins forย Pokemon Goย in the future.
