According to Nintendo, the demo will be going live around 11AM Central, which means your work day tomorrow is going to drag on way longer than it needs to. Of course, since the Switch is portable, there’s no reason you can’t take it with you to work to download the demo and play on your lunch break, right?! That’s what your humble writer will be doing, and you better believe that I’ll be bringing an extra controller to share. If I can get my editor-in-chief hooked, then there’s a good chance my lunch break will last much longer than usual tomorrow. Don’t tell him I told you that.

For those of you who are completely new to the game, which I assume is most of you, you’re in for a huge treat. I poured well-over 100 hours into the original Pokken Tournament on the Wii U, and it truly is one of those fighting games that opens up and becomes more addicting the more you practice. Once you find a Pokรฉmon that clicks with you and you decide to go all in with it as your main, there’s no turning back.

Even if you play fighting games all of the time, you’ve never played one like Pokken. Every match opens up as a 3D fighter where both players can navigate the ring in free 3D space with unique movesets. Once one player lands a critical blow, the game will switch and transform into a more traditional 2D or “left to right” fighter, and each Pokรฉmon has a unique moveset and unique combos that can only be pulled off in this stage.

Every match will swap between these two modes of fighting fairly consistently as players trade critical blows, which keeps things moving and feeling fresh. It’s a truly novel approach, and it absolutely works. But don’t take my word for it — you guys will be able to play this treasure for yourselves tomorrow!
