A PC RPG is 100% free to download and keep on Steam right now, but those interested only have roughly 24 hours to redeem the offer. Unfortunately for those on Steam Deck, the listing for the PC game notes that the Valve handheld is “Unsupported,” which means Valve testing indicates that either some or all of the game is not playable on the machine. Those on a standard PC don’t have to worry about this.

The new free Steam game comes from Pilgrim Adventures and GrabTheGames, and it is a dark RPG called The Deed, which has been available on Steam since 2015. In fact, on November 13, it will celebrate its 10th anniversary. Before this, though, and until 1:00 PM EST on September 27, it is free to download and keep.

About the Game + Trailer

The Deed is pitched by the aforementioned duo as a dark murder mystery that combines a classic adventure game with some RPG elements. The game picks up when Arran Bruce, the rightful heir to Dunshiel House, returns to his family home following his father disinheriting him from the will in favor of passing everything to his younger sister. As a result, Arran decides to kill his sister and restore his inheritance, which means you are tasked with getting away with murder.

According to Steam user reviews, while The Deed is humble in ambition and not the most visually impressive game, it is a solid adventure. This is evidenced by the fact that it has a 91% approval rating on Steam, which nets it a “Very Positive” rating.

Steam user reviews also reveal the game is only an hour or two long, though there is a lot of replayability built into the game, as it can take time to learn the mechanics and execute on a murder plan.

Sequels

An expanded version of the game, The Deed: Dynasty, was released on Steam as a follow-up in 2016. Meanwhile, a proper sequel, The Deed II was released in 2020. Neither of these games is currently free to download on Steam, but both are on sale for less than $1.

As you can see in the trailer above, none of these games are AAA releases or even big-budget indie games. That said, if you like old-style adventure games and murder mysteries, it sounds like there is enough to tickle your fancy. Meanwhile, if bigger is what you’re after, there was a noteworthy first-person shooter recently made free on Steam.
