Earlier this month Nintendo promised to reveal new Super Mario Odyssey info at this year’s Gamescom, and earlier this morning they delivered via a livestream event featuring the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Koizumi. The focus of the stream was the unveiling of a new world, the Luncheon Kingdom, which we’ve previously seen in screenshots, but not in action. You can check out an archived version of the livestream, above (jump to around the 9:30 for the Luncheon Kingdom footage).

As the name implies, the Luncheon Kingdom is food themed, with a certain European flair. Here’s how Koizumi describes it:

“The Kingdom was partly inspired by Italy and other European countries. Europe has a really rich variety of food cultures and cuisines, so when we were thinking of making a food-themed kingdom, it seemed like a natural choice to give it a European flavor. The Kingdom also has quite a unique art style — some Kingdoms look similar to our own world, like New Donk City, but others have a more surreal vibe to them.”

The Luncheon Kingdom’s look is certainly odd – why is everything neon colored and look like it’s made of plastic? I suspect it’s because food actually looks kind of gross when you get too close to it. Mario running around on giant clams and burger patties might have been a bit off-putting.

The footage also shows off other aspects of the new Kingdom – it seems the world is inhabited by freaky fork people, who are unhappy because an evil bird has taken over their giant “Stupendous Stew” pot. Mario can also don a chef’s outfit and throw food into a smaller stewpot to get various rewards. I wouldn’t necessarily say this is my favorite Super Mario Odyssey stage we’ve seen, but it looks like a solid addition.
