Toys have the unique power to turn curiosity into skill, and play into lifelong memories. They shape childhoods and often act as gateways to technology and creativity. The most successful ones endure the test of time across generations, from Barbie dolls to Lego sets, evolving while still maintaining their core appeal that made them popular in the first place. Few toys have reached the same level of global recognition as the Rubik’s Cube, a puzzle that has challenged and delighted millions since it was first invented in 1974.

The Rubik’s Cube has always been a symbol of puzzles and problem-solving, but soon it’s getting a modernized, futuristic twist. We recently attended a press presentation where Cubios, in collaboration with Rubik’s Cube owner, Spin Master, showcased the Rubik’s WOWCube ahead of its October launch. This innovative device blends classic cube mechanics with modern smart tech, creating a new way to play and interact with games. It features 24 digital screens and 8 autonomous computers, turning the classic cube into a platform for games and other various creative experiences. The WOWCube will officially launch at New York Comic Con this October, with a $299 price tag and a special discount for attendees.
The Future’s Rubik’s Cube

At its core, the WOWCube takes the familiar shape of the Rubik’s Cube and turns it into something entirely new. Instead of static colored squares, each of its 24 faces is a screen capable of displaying dynamic animations and interactive content. Rather than solving for solid colors, players can guide a ladybug across the cube by tilting it, smash bricks in Arkanoid, or even rotate a hero through an RPG adventure. Interaction is simple: no buttons, no touchscreen (yet), just tilts, taps, and rotations.
Despite its minimalist design, the cube packs serious technology. Eight processors power the system, alongside eight speakers, long-range microphones, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Battery life ranges between five and seven hours, with fast charging that restores 80 percent in about 30 minutes. The cube can also serve as a nightlight or ambient lamp, link to WhatsApp and various utility apps like Weather, and even function as a phone charger. It is designed not just as a toy but as a multipurpose device for households.
Games are central to its appeal, and the WOWCube ecosystem makes it easy to access and create them. Through the WOWCube Connect App, users can download games and apps spanning multiple genres, while the WOW Studio App lets players design custom games without any coding. STEM content has been a major focus, making it a potential alternative to smartphones for kids, with interactive learning presented in an engaging and screen-based format.
Durability, Modularity, and Customization

Unlike many electronics, the WOWCube has been built with durability in mind. If a screen breaks, it can be replaced individually rather than requiring a full unit replacement. To add extra protection, silicon corner bands can be attached without interfering with gameplay or general functionality. This modular approach ensures the cube lasts longer while keeping maintenance simple and cost-effective.
The design is also highly customizable. The cube is an open platform, and the team behind it is actively encouraging indie developers to create new games and apps. Affiliate programs are already in place, and the WOW Studio App gives anyone the tools to design content for it, without needing to dig into code. This emphasis on creativity ensures that the cube will not run out of new things to try, helping it grow beyond the novelty stage into a long-lasting ecosystem.
Even outside of gaming, the WOWCube offers flexibility. It can run several processes at once, making it more comparable to a smartphone than a toy. Families can use it as an interactive game system, a nightlight, a social centerpiece for multiplayer fun, or even as a companion device for other gaming platforms in the future. It is designed to be more than a gadget that gets shelved, instead aiming to be a significant part of daily life.
Looking Ahead to the Future of the Cube

The upcoming launch is just the beginning for the WOWCube. A follow-up version, unofficially dubbed “WOWCube 2.0”, is already scheduled for a future release. It will feature touchscreen support across all faces, expanding how players and developers can interact with the device. By layering modern touchscreen controls on top of tilt-and-tap functionality, it promises to unlock entirely new possibilities.
The developers have also teased upcoming features designed to push the cube beyond gaming. An interactive Octopus companion is in development, suggesting AI-powered interactions similar to a digital pet. As mentioned earlier, touchscreens are a planned feature for the future of the WOWCube, but Cubios values getting into the hands of the general public as it is now to get positive word of mouth ongoing about the project.
Ultimately, the team has ambitious goals. For 2025, they have set a clear objective: to make the WOWCube the coolest toy under the Christmas tree this upcoming holiday season. It is a boldly stated mission, but with its mix of nostalgia, modern technology, and creative potential, the WOWCube stands a chance of becoming just that. The Rubik’s Cube may have begun as a simple puzzle, but the WOWCube shows that even timeless toys can be reborn for an entirely new era of play with the integration of modern technology.
