Titanfall 2 kind of snuck up on a lot of people, becoming one of the most acclaimed games of 2016. Unfortunately, Game of the Year lists don't necessarily equal sales, and Titanfall 2 ultimately underperformed, selling a little under 3 million copies worldwide.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vince Zampella admitted his game had fallen short of expectations.

"The game was successful, it sold well, but it didn't quite sell as well as it should have. Maybe because it was super crowded, the pricing was aggressive -- it was a rough window to launch our game."

Thankfully, it seems Titanfall 2's so-so sales haven't completely derailed the franchise, as Respawn promises they'll be bringing us more mech battles…

"It's important for us to keep the franchise going. We're working on more Titanfall -- we're not announcing what that is yet, but there's a few other things in the works. We have our franchise creative director, who's in charge of safeguarding the franchise in multiple formats and making sure it continues to grow. There's some other things we're doing that haven't been announced just yet, but we're heavily invested in the Titanfall universe."

Respawn's next game is a Star Wars project being led by God of War III director Stig Asmussen. Zampella didn't specify if Respawn would be working on multiple titles simultaneously, or fans Titanfall fans would have to wait for them to wrap up their Star Wars game.

Regardless, I do hope Titanfall gets another chance. Sometimes it takes a while for positive reviews and word of mouth to pay off – Titanfall 2 may have struggled, but I have a feeling a lot more people will be willing to try Titanfall 3, particularly if EA releases it at a more strategic time of year. If you'd like to help boost Titanfall 2's numbers a bit, it now has a new ultimate edition available.

Titanfall 2 is currently available on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
