Final Fantasy is a huge franchise with a lot of games, but those games aren’t all created equal. While there are a fair number of FF games that have endings that stick with you, that’s not true for all of them. Instead, you have some endings that just don’t feel right, either through the events that lead up to it, or the lack of closure with characters you just spent dozens of hours getting to know. Of all Final Fantasy games, though, these three endings specifically missed the mark, leaving them lackluster at best.

3. Final Fantasy 12

It might not be the most popular in the franchise, but Final Fantasy 12 is fun enough. The downside is that a lot of the focus feels like it’s on the world to a point that the characters don’t get as much attention as they could have. When you’re playing through it, the ending is rather rushed, which does make sense in terms of the story itself. However, having the ending sequence so rushed impacts the gameplay. Afterwards, you have your main cast either take a new position now that they’ve defeated the tyrant, or go off to have another adventure. It’s a fine conclusion overall, but it can’t compete with most other FF endings.
2. The Final Fantasy Legend

The Final Fantasy Legend is also known as SaGa, and it has no direct connection to Final Fantasy, but ended up as part of the franchise through its name when it was released in North America, likely for the sake of brand recognition. Anyway, this game has a simple plot, which is fun since you’re a group of warriors fighting through a tower in order to find paradise at the top.
However, the last stretch of the game is brutal to fight through, with many players having to savescum in order to even hope they’ll reach the end. After you fight all the way to the top and fight the Creator, your group finds a door to an unknown location. Instead of entering to maybe find the paradise they were after in the first place, they decide to just turn around and go back to their own world. Yes, you make an entire journey just to decide to go back without seeing what’s on the other side.
1. Final Fantasy 2

Final Fantasy 2 isn’t a bad game, but the ending just doesn’t do it justice. The emperor has brought hell to earth, and he’s causing all sorts of destruction. Naturally, your party defeats him, and your allies congratulate you on the victory. Life starts again for everybody and the world forgets all the bad memories of the event over time, leaving just the memories of the heroes. This conclusion is just too nice and clean, especially for all the chaos leading up to it. This can partially be explained away and accepted by the fact that Final Fantasy was still in its early days as a franchise, but it still doesn’t prevent FF2 from being a disappointment.
