We’re a few weeks away from the start of another NHL season, which means we’re about to get an all new experience from EA Sports as well. But you won’t have to wait until the puck drops to give NHL 18 a try.

The publisher has announced that an open beta has launched for the game, and you can download it and play it now for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 free of charge. The beta includes a number of modes that you’ll be able to play in the full game once it releases, including a new one called NHL Threes, which has a three-on-three style set-up similar to a number of different arcade games, like Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey from the N64 era.

According to the company, the mode focuses on “bigger hits, faster gameplay, and highlight reel goals through fun three-on-three matches.” You can try it online as well, or stick with local play.

You’ll also be able to try out the traditional online versus mode with six-on-six match-ups as well as the new changes that are featured in the gameplay, so you can focus on your style of play and get ready for the full release.

Last but certainly not least, you’ll be able to get a taste of the new EA Sports Hockey League, which allows you to focus on playing with a team of other players, and practicing your teamwork skills. The league supports both six-on-six and three-on-three set-ups, so no matter which one you may prefer, you can find something to your liking.

The full game will have many other features, including the ability to unlock star cards, as well as a single player campaign that will take you through a variety of regional circuits, as well as a handful of challenges that will test your hockey mettle. From what we’ve played thus far, it’s a complete blast.

The game will also introduce many arcade elements, including the ability to play as mascots in the game, as well as money pucks that can score your team extra points, or remove them from your opponents’ tally.

The beta is open from now through August 8th.

NHL 18 releases on September 15th for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
