Within the past week alone, we’ve gotten two new trailers — one domestic and one international — and an updated movie poster. While the two trailers are received generally positive reviews online, the poster has been subjected to incredible amounts of scrutiny.
Many fans of everybody’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man feel that the poster is too busy or is designed of a lower quality. And now, industry veterans are getting in on it.

Industry veteran illustrator Tommy Lee Edwards feels that the poster comes off as an unfinished product.
“In a way, that Spider-Man poster almost looks like, ‘Here’s a bunch of references I got from the movie. Let’s put it all together and see how it looks,’” Edwards told The Verge. “From there, you might be inspired to do a real poster. Instead, they just stopped at that point. It just looks like it’s not even finished.”
Edwards has worked on several productions over the last 20 years, including work for the Harry Potter franchise and LucasFilm.
According to Edwards, a movie poster should represent all of the hard work each cast and crew member put into the project.
“A movie is something that so many people work so hard on for so long,” Edwards reflected. “I feel like the poster should honor that time and love that went into this piece of art. If a poster can show what that movie is about, rather than a big actor’s head, I think that’s a really important thing. So the genre, the tone, the kind of story. Not every poster has to be a montage of elements, but when you do those kinds of posters, they can be done really, really well.”
Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) returns home to live with his Aunt May. Under the watchful eye of mentor Tony Stark, Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man. He also tries to return to his normal daily routine — distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just a friendly neighborhood superhero. Peter must soon put his powers to the test when the evil Vulture emerges to threaten everything that he holds dear.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts, from a screenplay by Jonathan M. Goldstein & John Francis Daley and Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, and stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters July 7, 2017.
