Netflix’s Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes are set to unite onscreen in next month’s The Defenders. But two of the group’s members already have quite a history – one that will be addressed in a particular way within the upcoming miniseries.

Mike Colter, who plays Luke Cage in the shared universe, was asked at the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel about the past romantic relationship his character had with fellow Defender Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter). With the pair departing at the end of season one of Jessica Jones, Colter reassured that the tension between them isn’t over – it just might not be a big priority, considering the larger threat posed by Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver).
“The flame is not out, let’s be honest.” Colter revealed. “This is one of those things where there’s a lot of fighting, we have to save New York City, I have to sort this thing out with Danny Rand. We have a lot of stuff going on. I think there’s some progress, I think we make some strides but this is a long form television series that, you know, we could go there now, but then where do we have to go? It takes time.”
Colter also likened Jessica and Luke’s new dynamic in the event of crisis seen in The Defenders to a certain reality show.
“If anyone’s ever seen an episode of Naked and Afraid, it’s weird. They’re naked and they’re afraid. They’re naked, but they’re also afraid.” Colter explained. “The nudity is something but the fear supersedes the nudity. So even if you were with someone, like Jessica and I, you’re never really thinking about that because there’s too much danger.”
The Defenders will premiere on Netflix on August 18th, 2017.
The Defenders stars Charlie Cox (Daredevil/Matt Murdock), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Finn Jones (Iron Fist), Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Sigourney Weaver (Alexandra), Elodie Yung (Elektra Natchios), Babs Olusanmokun (Sowande), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Rachel Taylor (Trish Walker), Scott Glenn (Stick), Eka Darville (Malcolm Ducasse), Debbi Morgan (Delores), Carrie-Anne Moss (Jeri Hogarth), and Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page).
Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, Luke Cage season 1, and Iron Fist season 1 are all available on Netflix now. The Punisher will arrive later this fall. Netflix has announced second seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, and a third season of Daredevil, but no release dates have been announced for those either.
