Thor understands the ins-and-outs of sibling rivalry, and Chris Hemsworth can relate. The Australian actor has two famous brothers to contend with at home, and Hemsworth admits his younger brother pushed him to nab the role of Thor.

After all, it wasn’t like the older brother could let Liam Hemsworth snag the part from underneath him.
Recently, Hemsworth sat down with W Magazine to talk about his career, and it was there that Liam was brought up. The Marvel star confessed he blew his first audition for Thor.
“I came into the audition with Kenneth Branagh and thought I nailed it and then never heard anything back. Months went by and then my brother, my little brother, Liam, was in Australia and sent a tape across and he got a call back, then another call back and then was down to the last kind of four or five people for it,” Hemsworth said.
“I remember sitting in Vancouver, shooting Cabin in the Woods with Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon. Both of them were looking at the trades at this sort of top five guys for Thor and saying, ‘Why aren’t you in the mix here? What happened?’ I said, ‘I don’t know. I blew my audition I guess.’”
However, the Norse pantheon must have blessed Hemsworth as Thor continued casting. As it turned out, none of Marvel’s frontrunners were offered the movie’s titular role, and the opening gave Hemsworth’s one more chance at suiting up.
“I came in kind of with a little, I guess, motivation and maybe frustration that my little brother had gotten further than me. It’s a little family, sibling rivalry sort of kicked up in me. Then it moved pretty quick from there. It was cool.”
Hemsworth is no doubt pleased he scored the role. Thor has become one of the MCU’s most enduring heroes, and he will soon reappear in theaters with a third standalone film. As for Liam, the younger brother has not fared poorly in the unfair world of Hollywood. The actor rocketed to fame with his own franchise as he co-starred in The Hunger Games with Jennifer Lawrence.
