Nebula has appeared in two Marvel Cinematic Universe outings so far, but you definitely haven’t seen her like this.

Karen Gillan, who plays the blue-hued Guardians of the Galaxy character, recently shared a photo of a hand holding up her prosthetic face makeup after it was removed from her face. Gillan captioned the photo “Nebula’s face at the end of the day”, referencing the currently-filming Avengers: Infinity War sequel. You can check it out below.
While the end result looks pretty flawless onscreen, this look at the mask-like layer of Nebula makeup is fascinating – and kinda creepy. Fans of Gillan have already likened the photo to everything from the iconic ‘The Scream’ painting to a Fruit Roll-Up.
Gillan has long commented on the lengthy process of turning into Nebula – particularly how it effects her hair. While the actress shaved her entire head for the first Guardians film, the makeup team figured out a compromise for this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
When Nebula does appear in the next two Avengers installments, fans can expect to see even more layers to her character. Gillan previously hinted that Nebula’s past – particularly her relationship with her adopted father and Infinity War antagonist Thanos – will be explored in the saga. The actress has advocated for Nebula’s arc to follow its comic roots, culminating in the moment where she takes the Infinity Gauntlet for herself.
But, don’t worry not everything will be doom and gloom for Nebula in her next Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance. She will reportedly will gain an “unexpected” new best friend along the way.
