It looks like Thanos won’t be doing his Infinity Gauntlet schtick alone like he said he would. When the Mad Titan promised to gather all the Infinity Gem on his own, the tyrant apparently meant he would be enlisting an alien army’s help – and comic book fans should recognize one of Avengers: Infinity War‘s rumored baddies.

Earlier today, Just Jared posted a couple set photos from the third Avengers movie, and one image is grabbing lots of attention. One of the pictures sees Benedict Cumberbatch bruised up as Doctor Strange. The caped character is shown on the ground as a man dressed in a CGI suit pins him down. There is no outward way to tell who the CGI baddie throttling Doctor Strange will be post-effects, but the photo does give fans a big clue.

The actor wearing the CGI get-up has dots lining his suit and face, something which suggest his character will require a full-body transformation. There is also a label on the suit’s shoulder that reads ‘EB MAW,’ and the tag has got Marvel fans thinking Ebony Maw will make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War.

If you are not familiar with Ebony Maw, then you should know the Marvel character has a long history with Thanos. The alien is a member of the Black Order, a group which has been rumored to appear in Avengers: Infinity War for some time. Rather than a fighter, Ebony is known for his dangerous wit as he can persuade anyone to do his bidding simply by speaking. In the comics, Thanos once tasked Ebony with dispatching Doctor Strange when the Titan wanted to overtake Earth, and Ebony was even able to put Doctor Strange under his control for a period of time.

Given Ebony’s connection to both Thanos and Doctor Strange, it seems like Avengers: Infinity War has ground to bring him to the big screen. Fans of the MCU will know that Doctor Strange is connected to another Infinity Gem because of the Eye of Agamotto. The sorcerer is tasked with protecting the artifact, but Thanos will need it to complete his gauntlet. Ebony would be the perfect minion to pit against the mystical superhero, and the alien might be able to force Doctor Strange to turn on his Avengers compatriots should the need arise.
