Is The Original Thor Returning To the Marvel Universe?

Marvel Comics is promoting its upcoming Marvel Legacy initiative as a return of classic characters and long-running numberings, bringing the best parts of the old together with the new. And with the release of solicitations for November’s comics, we can expect Marvel to bring the thunder.

Jane Foster has held the title of Thor for the last few years, wielding the magic hammer Mjolnir as a member of the Avengers, while the Asgardian now known as Odinson was deemed Unworthy.

But the cover of November’s The Mighty Thor #701 hints that the original character will make his long-awaited return.

The variant cover by Alex Ross teases a major plot point in Jason Aaron’s storyline. With James Harren providing the art for a story called “The Death of Jane Foster,” perhaps Lady Thor’s time is up

And maybe Odinson is once again Worthy to wield Mjolnir.

Though the events of the films do not specifically dictate what is happening in the comic books, Marvel does tend to enjoy consistency in their various offerings. For example, there’s no more Wolverine but there is an Old Man Logan, Groot is younger in the pages of Guardians of the Galaxy, and the mantle of Ant-Man belongs solely to Scott Lang at the moment.

Sure, Captain America is Hydra, Iron Man is in a coma while his AI consciousness flies around in the suit, and Hulk is, well, dead, but none of those will stick for long.

By the time Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters, we might just have the original Son of Odin back as the God of Thunder. And if the title of the storyline is accurate, get ready to break out the tissues for Jane Foster.

The Mighty Thor #701 will be released on November 15, about two weeks after Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters.
