Marvel has made a big push in recent years to increase the profile of one of their more obscure properties with the Inhumans. After raising their prominence in the Marvel Comics publishing line and introducing the concept to the TV watching audience on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the company’s plans to feature the Royal Family are finally coming to fruition this fall.

Showrunner Scott Buck spoke to Empire about Marvel Television and ABC‘s latest series, which is set to premiere the first two episodes in IMax theaters before airing on the network this fall. Buck said even though Marvel’s The Inhumans will feature characters with extraordinary superpowers, it will a grounded take on the fantastic.
“There will be plenty of humour and fantastic elements,” Buck said, “but we’re dealing with relatable people in a moment of great crisis: a royal family forced into the position of refugees. They just happen to have superpowers.”
While speaking about the show’s IMAX premiere, he said those first two episodes playing in theaters will allow for “a massive, dramatic opening.”

“It allows us to think bigger; to use visuals you don’t normally get on your television screen,” Buck said. “We wanted [it to be] strikingly beautiful and unusual.”
It sounds like Buck is intending for The Inhumans to channel the original spirit deftly captured by Jack Kirby. Whether or not it achieves that goal remains to be seen, but we’ll find out when the show premieres in IMAX and on ABC in September.
“After the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where their surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them may prove to not only save them, but Earth itself.”
