Marvel Television and Netflix today released a brand new trailer for Marvel's Iron Fist. The trailer emphasized that the new series would be the debut of the "Final Defender" (a sly inversion of the subtitle to Captain America: The First Avenger), but it also revealed a tie to the first Defenders series, Marvel's Daredevil.
In the first season of Marvel's Daredevil, Daredevil took on several crime lords operating in New York City, including the Kingpin and the Owl. Another crime lord was Madame Gao, a peculiar woman who was selling drugs packaged by blind servants.
One episode of Marvel's Daredevil, it was revealed that Gao's drug was called "Steel Serpent." The bags of Steel Serpent were marked with a distinctive, serpentine symbol.
Both Madame Gao and the Steel Serpent drug and symbol can be spotted in the new Marvel's Iron Fist trailer. Gao is only seen in shadow, but the drug with the serpentine symbol can be seen in plain sight.
The significance of this symbol and name is that they belong to Iron Fist's archenemy, Davos the Steel Serpent, who has the serpentine symbol tattooed on his chest just like Iron Fist has his dragon tattoo. Davos is a native of K'un Lun, the mystical city that takes in Danny Rand when he becomes lost in the mountains as a boy.
He is also the son of Lei Kung the Thunderer, the martial arts master who trains Danny Rand. Davos himself attempted to become the Iron Fist but failed to defeat the dragon Shao-Lao the Undying. When Danny Rand succeeded and took the mantle of Iron Fist, Davos was ashamed, bitter and jealous. He tried and failed to have Danny killed. When his plot was discovered, Davos was exiled from K'un Lun.
