As the writer, director, and producer of critically acclaimed shows and books, Noah Hawley is no stranger to telling great stories. But his X-Men-based TV series for FX is much different than anything else he’s done.

For starters, Legion is getting a second season in 2018, but most of Hawley’s other projects are self-contained with satisfying endings. Each season of the anthology show Fargo has its own conclusion, and none of his books have sequels.

With that in mind, we asked Hawley at San Diego Comic-Con how long Legion would continue. Check out the video above!

“We had eight episodes in the first season, we’re going to do 10 this year. I have a structure, I have a kind of endpoint in my mind, but I don’t know yet how many episodes or seasons that is,” Hawley said. “I never want to overstay the welcome and I never want the show to become predictable.”

Asked to elaborate on the ending, Hawley said “there will be an ending, that we know.”

“It’s an experiment. It’s something we’re building from the ground up,” added Rachel Keller, who stars as Syd Barrett in the series. “There’s no new cast this season, we’re just continuing to explore and experiment.”

We’ll learn more about the continuation of Legion as we approach its Season 2 premiere in 2018.

Legion is the story of a troubled young man who may be more than human. It introduces the story of David Haller, who since he was a teenager, has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.

Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Rachel Keller (Fargo), Jean Smart (Fargo), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Jeremie Harris (A Walk Among the Tombstones), Amber Midthunder (Hell or High Water), Katie Aselton (The League) and Bill Irwin (Interstellar) star in Legion.

Noah Hawley (Fargo) serves as an Executive Producer along with Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Deadpool), Bryan Singer (X-Men: Apocalypse, Superman Returns), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Martian), Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones), Jim Chory (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones) and John Cameron (Fargo, The Big Lebowski). Legion is the latest project from Hawley and Cameron, two of the Executive Producers of the Emmy and Golden Globe -winning FX limited series Fargo.
