In just a few weeks, fans will witness the end of an X-Men era. Hugh Jackman will don Wolverine‘s claws for the last time as he makes his return in Logan. The gritty film will bring a new type of feel to Hollywood’s many superhero films, and Logan is set to focus on Wolverine’s complex relationship with a young mutant girl. Forced to go on the run, Wolverine and Professor Xavier begin to uncover the secrets behind the girl’s familiar mutant gifts, and the director of Logan is now hinting he’d like to explore the heroine’s backstory further.
Speaking with We Got This Covered, James Mangold took time to speak about his tenure with Logan. When the director was asked if he’d like to make any other superhero flicks, Mangold unsurprisingly threw out that he was interested in doing more with Logan’s newest character.

“I think Dafne is incredible in the film and I would love to see another film about that character and that’s certainly something I’d be involved in,” he said.
“For me that was one of the big additions I brought to the table, this decision to try to make the film about family and to try to insert Laura and the pressures that would put and the idea about Charles ailing.”
Of course, comic book fans will be familiar with Logan’s companion. The young girl’s name is none other than Laura, and Marvel readers should quickly associated the name with X-23. In the comics, Laura Kinney was brought to readers after appearing in a cartoon series, and X-23 quickly became a staple mutant. The heroine was gifted mutant powers by a team of scientists who wanted to clone Weapon X, AKA: Wolverine. However, the scientists were none to gentle with Laura as they forced her to become a merciless assassin, and X-23 disposed of her handlers before seeking out the X-Men.
Logan takes place in the year 2029, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan’s vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn’t seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn’t over yet.
