Marvel's New U.S.Avengers Launching This Fall

The Avengers have been a global force for good for decades, but now a group of them are going to focus on what's going on at their home shores in U.S.Avengers. The new series debuting this fall will feature writer Al Ewing and artist Paco Medina, as they shift directly into this new status quo from their current series, New Avengers.

U.S.Avengers has the same creative team as New Avengers, and also has the same leader, Roberto Da Costa, who leads this group through his revamped A.I.M. Once a villainous organization, it's now American Intelligence Mechanics, and his team will operate as an official government-based group in Washington, D.C. in what Ewing promises is a "flashy new headquarters."

In the announcement at The Washington Post, Ewing revealed the eclectic line-up of the team. While Da Costa (himself the mutant known as Sunspot that was once on the team of "New Mutants") brings along his pal Cannonball, most of the squad is new. Squirrel Girl also returns as a team member, and Pod comes back after some time off, while the additions of Red Hulk (General "Thunderbolt" Ross), a new Iron Patriot, Dr. Toni Ho, and a time-traveling Captain America from the future - whose surprising secret identity is Danielle Cage, daughter of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones - round out the crew.

"We wanted a couple of members that'd speak to the U.S. in the title — hence super-scientist and supporting player Dr. Toni Ho stepping up to the main team as the new Iron Patriot, and General Ross waiting in the wings as the Red Hulk," Ewing said in the announcement. But what about a time-traveling Danielle Cage? She's from "about thirty years in the future," and chases "an enemy from her time" for the first story arc. That character is "Golden Skill," who is trying to alter the past to secure his future, like every good time-traveling villain.

Ewing hopes to explore the nature of Patriotism in his latest Avengers book with Medina, and said that the new team make-up will offer plenty of "friction," with someone like Red Hulk taking orders from an immigrant who's a few decades younger than him.

U.S. Avengers launches as part of the latest edition of Marvel NOW! this fall, after the conclusion of Civil War II. Check out Medina's concept art for the team's characters in the gallery below.
