Spider-Man: Homecoming is now in theaters, bringing the character of Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a compelling story about how Peter Parker tries to prove himself as an Avenger. That story involves Peter getting a major upgrade in costume form the homemade duds he had been wearing – and upgrade that comes courtesy of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man.

The trailers and promotional materials for Spider-Man: Homecoming have made Spider-Man’s costume upgrades a major feature of the film. However, Marvel fans may not have been prepared for just how much of the film revolved around Spider-Man’s suit upgrades – so here’s a list of just how many of those features Peter had to utilize (or work around) during the events of Homecoming.

Here are Spider-Man’s Costume Upgrades in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Karen

Like all of Tony Stark’s hi-tech suits, Spider-Man gets an A.I. helper to help watch his back, and walk him through all of his suit’s functions. Peter names his A.I. “Karen,” which he feels is a lot more personal than calling her “Suit Lady.”ย

Asย a nice Easter egg for Marvel fans, Karen gets a major celebratory voice in the form of Jennifer Connelly.ย

Electric Webs

One of the many webbing functions that Peter’s Stark suit has is electric webs, which doesn’t help Peter as much as he hopes, since he hasn’t really mastered the different webbing functions when he goes into combat.ย

Hey, maybe in the sequel, orย Avengers: Infinity War?ย

Web Wings

Spider-Man Homecoming Web Wings

One of the biggest standout moments of theย Spider-Man: Homecomingย trailers, was the scene where Peter takes flight on his very own web wings.ย

The wings are a throwback to some of the first Spider-Man comics, in which the wings were a regular part of Spider-Man’s costume. They allow Peter to glide over a short distance – a feature he uses to save his friends from a near-death disaster at the Washington Monument.ย

Surveillance Mode

Spider-Man Homecoming Surveillance Mode

Spider-Man’s new costume made a big splash inย Captain America: Civil Warย for its animatronicย eyes, which move and focus along with Peter’s eye movement beneath his mask.ย

Spider-Man: Homecomingย reveals that Spider-Man’s mask and eye functions go way beyond simple animation; thanks to the Stark tech, Peter’s mask offers a whole surveillanceย mode that allows him to see in different spectrums, like The Predator.ย

Peter uses surveillance mode to ambush The Vulture and his crew during their attempted heist of a truck convoy in Maryland. It also helps him save his friends later, during that calamity at the Washingtonย Memorial.ย

Web Grenades

Another one of the new webbing functions that Peter gets with his Stark suit is web grenades. These time-bomb-style weapons allow peter to shoot balls of webbing that suddenly burst open into net-like spider webs.ย

One ofย Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s biggest action sequencesย takes place on the Staten Island Ferry, where Peter must use a variety of different web functions to take out members of The Vulture’s crew. The web grenades, in particular, resulted in one of the scene’s biggest (and most impressive) bad guy takedowns.ย

Spider-Drone

If the “Karen” A.I. wasn’t enough, Peter gets assistance from a specialized Spider-drone built into his costume, which performs reconnaissanceย for him, and can even help map out entire environments.ย

The Spider-Drone comes in handy when Peter needs to get into the Washington Monument and save his friends, by helping Peter come up with a workable solution to entering the monument and getting to his friends, before the elevator they are on, plummets.ย

Not to mention: Spider-Drone is pretty darn cute!

Enhanced Combat Mode (Shoot to Kill)

Spider-Man Homecoming Enhanced Combat Mode Shoot to Kill

In one of the funniest recurring moments inย Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter has to keep telling Karen that he doesn’t want to access “Shoot to Kill Mode,” which is the colloquial name for this suit’s enhanced combat mode.ย

When in ECM, Peter’s Spider-Man eyes turn black, with little infrared dots for eyes. It’s a scary look for the friendly neighborhood hero, and thoughย Homecoming never goes down that dark path, there’s still potential for fans to see that deadly version of the Spider-Man suit down the line in sequels or other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies – whether it’s Peter in the suit, or someone more nefarious.ย
