Reported by Heroic Hollywood, the cast update comes on the heels of the announcement that Garret Dillahunt would be joining the series in the recurring role of the villain Ahab.
In comics Shatter is a teenager who attempted suicide after manifesting his mutant powers. However, he didn’t realize that the mutation made his body virtually invulnerable and his attempt didn’t hurt him beyond leaving a large, cracked depression in his head. From there Shatter ran away from home and joined up with the Postman’s Morlock, a group of mutant misfits.
There are no specifics on how Shatter will fit into the comics, though it’s likely that the show’s version of Shatter will be considerably older than the comics’ original as Rivers is 43. However, it’s not a stretch to imagine the character encountering District Attorney Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer) and his family as they go on the run following the discovery of his own children’s mutant abilities.
Rivers may be a new face to The Gifted‘s audience. The actor is best known for his role as Officer Carter in Lifetime’s series Devious Maids.

The Gifted premieres Monday, Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
