Kevin Feige Is Confident Marvel Will Work With ‘Ragnarok’ Director Taika Waititi Again

Next month, audiences will get to see Taika Waititi‘s take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thor: Ragnarok. And if Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has his way, that hopefully won’t be Waititi’s only venture in the MCU.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Feige addressed the possibility of Waititi helming another MCU film. While Marvel’s main focus is its next six films – culminating in Avengers 4 – he sounded optimistic that Waititi could be involved with a film beyond that.

“Well, we’ll see.” Feige explained. “I would love, love, love to work with Taika again and I have every confidence that we will. What we’re working on right now is the next six movies. The next six movies that will bring us to Untitled Avengers in May 2019, which carries off a lot of what you see in this movie. In some cases very directly, and continues to build and grow.”

The fate of the post-Avengers 4 MCU is largely under wraps, with only a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 currently greenlit. But Feige and Guardians director James Gunn are already plotting decades of the MCU’s cosmic future, and judging by Waititi’s grip on Ragnarok, it sounds like he could be a part of that.

Jack Kirby Influences

In particular, Feige highlighted the ability for Waititi to bring the unique style of comic icon Jack Kirby to life onscreen.

“Jack Kirby has been an influence on every Marvel movie we’ve ever made, because he built the Marvel Universe with Stan, Steve Ditko, and the whole gang there.” Feige explained. “But this movie, and coincidentally being the 100th year anniversary of Jack Kirby’s birth, we really wanted to be that unabashed love letter… When talking to the art department, and saying, ‘Oh look at that, it really should be like this,’ looking at Jack Kirby costumes and background panels, and the art department doing something inspired by it. And then Taika going ‘No, no. Do this! [referencing exact Kirby art]’ And that’s why you have, it’s direct to translation of Kirby’s artwork which hasn’t been seen in a movie before.”

Judging by early reactions to Ragnarok, that translation has definitely paid off. The film has received rave early reviews from critics, and is on track for a significant opening weekend at the box office. ComicBook.com’s own Brandon Davis has already praised the film, saying that it “fully [embraces] the cosmic elements and comics” after visiting its set last year.
