With a solo Venom movie on the way from Sony Pictures, co-creator Todd McFarlane wants to know what direction the movie will take. In an interview with Screen Geek during a visit to New York Comic Con, the legendary comic book writer and artist shared some of his questions about this second go at a live-action Eddie Brock.

“What’s Venom gonna look like?” McFarlane said. “It’s an R-rated movie, how ‘R’ are they going to go? To me, that’s the question. Are they going to go a ‘little bit R’? Venom’s a monster to me, and to me โ€” are they going to make him a monster or are they going to make him a man? Are they going to humanize him? That’s what we gotta find out.”

Speaking with ComicBook.com at New York Comic Con, McFarlane said he hasn’t read the script and pondered if the movie would look like Logan or Deadpool (both rated R), adding that “if they gave me that character, I would scare the shโ€”t out of people with it.” McFarlane might have to wait like everyone else: he’s got his hands full with the new Spawn movie he’s directing, writing and producing, which he hopes will birth a franchise.

We know little about Venom: we know Spider-Man won’t be involved, and the movie will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad), scripted by Jeff Pinker (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), and will star Tom Hardy, Jenny Slate, and possibly Riz Ahmed and Michelle Williams.

Produced by Avi Arad (Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy), Matthew Tolmach (The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Venom is set to swing into theaters October 5, 2018.
