This Wild Spider-Man Story Would Give Andrew Garfield His Dream MCU Return

Back in April, Andrew Garfield revealed exactly what it would take to bring his Spider-Man back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this wild Marvel Comics story would fulfil his wish. British actor Andrew Garfield first appeared as Peter Parker in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man reboot in 2012, taking over from Tobey Maguire, who played the wall-crawler in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Garfield reprised the role in 2014, and then made a much-anticipated return in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Maguire and Tom Holland, but his time as Spider-Man still may not be over.

“I really loved playing Spider-Man, I would love to play the character again in some capacity,” Andrew Garfield revealed at the Middle East Film & Comic Con in April 2025 (via Instagram), though he does have one condition. “But I think it would have to be very weird. I would want to do something very strange. I would want to do something very unique and offbeat and surprising. Kind of like the creative freedom they have with the animatedย Spider-Verseย movies. They’re so great, and you can honor the character in so many different ways through the multiverse.”

Andrew Garfield’s wish to do something “very weird… very strange… very unique and offbeat and surprising” means there’s one Marvel Comics story that would work perfectly for his Spider-Man return. During 1982’s Marvel Fanfare series, Peter Parker and X-Men member Warren Worthington III are captured in the Savage Land and experimented on by the Mutates and their leader, Brainchild. Brainchild devolves these heroes into their primordial forms, which turns Spider-Man into the Man-Spider, a twisted version of Parker who is more spider than man. Bringing Garfield back as the Man-Spider would certainly be weird, strange, unique, offbeat, and surprising.

The Man-Spider returned to Marvel Comics years later after the Queen triggered another transformation in Peter Parker during 2004’s Avengers Disassembled event. The monstrous creature also had a role in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, which ran for five seasons between 1995 and 1998. The Man-Spider has never been seen in live-action, however, as it might have been deemed too outrageous in the past. In the current climate of superhero adventures, however, especially with the exploration of the multiverse in recent years, the Man-Spider is something we can definitely see appearing in the MCU.

Andrew Garfield’s ability to effortlessly deliver drama and comedy simultaneously would make him the perfect Spider-Man candidate to become the Man-Spider. He would be able to riff off of how weird the whole experience would be, while also spotlighting Peter Parker’s vulnerability and exposure during this transformation. A six-armed Spider-Man was seen during the credits sequence at the end of What If…? season 3, so there is precedence for more wild and wacky Spider-Men to appear in the MCU, and Andrew Garfield’s Man-Spider would be an incredible and unexpected addition.
