Considering Marvel Studios’ penchant for secrecy, there’s still a lot about Avengers: Doomsday fans don’t know. The film’s cast was announced back in March, but the lack of officially released plot details have made it difficult to predict how all the puzzle pieces will come together. In the interim, fans have been positing their own Doomsday theories, trying to figure out what they can from any set photos or set videos that have come out since production started. Now, those fans have something new to pore over — and it comes straight from the Doomsday directors.

On Instagram, the official account for filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo posted an extremely blurry image of what appears to be writing on a board. The white markings are borderline indecipherable, but that hasn’t stopped fans from attempting to unravel the mystery. The Russos’ use of the hashtag #DoomsdayIsComing confirms this tease is related to their next Marvel movie. Check out the post in the space below:
What Could the Russos’ Avengers: Doomsday Tease Mean?
One of the more popular hypotheses circulating online is that the photo is a zoomed-in look at Reed Richards’ chalkboard from The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Some fans are speculating Reed has written out equations to figure out a way to defeat Doctor Doom and/or traverse the multiverse, similar to his brainstorming sessions when solving the Galactus problem. That theory holds a lot of water; the Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits scene showed Doctor Doom taking a keen interest in young Franklin Richards. If Doom absconds with the youngster, it stands reason to believe Reed and family will do everything they can to track Doom down.
A couple of fans in the Instagram comments speculated the writing could be symbols related to Moon Knight, a character who hasn’t been seen since Moon Knight aired on Disney+ in 2022. It hasn’t been officially confirmed when or if Moon Knight will return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but fans remain hopeful Oscar Isaac will reprise the role in either Moon Knight Season 2 or one of the movies. People theorized Isaac could have a part in Doomsday when he cancelled his scheduled appearance at Star Wars Celebration Japan in the spring. The convention coincided with the beginning of Doomsday production.
Another possibility is the Russos are teasing some sort of official announcement regarding Doomsday. Shortly after Marvel’s record-breaking Doomsday cast announcement livestream, Kevin Feige confirmed that there would be more Doomsday casting reveals shared in the future. No such confirmations have happened yet, despite constant rumors that the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Ryan Reynolds, and more have roles in the film. Marvel could be gearing up for another chairs event — potentially to commemorate the completion of principal photography (assuming Doomsday is close to wrapping).
It’ll be interesting to see if the Russos deliver some sort of follow-up on this. It would be unusual for them to drop this tease (sparking intense debates and theorizing among the fan base) if it wasn’t part of some larger plan. Marvel is typically very particular about the way it does business, aiming to control information rollout about its projects. With the Doomsday premiere still over a year away, there’d be little reason to tease fans with something unless there was about to be another official reveal. Hopefully, the directors clear things up soon.
