According to a report from THR, Billy Magnussen is joining the cast of Disney‘s live-action Aladdin as a character named Prince Anders.
This is the latest casting news for the Guy Ritchie-directed take on the 1992 Disney animated classic. Previously it was announced that newcomer Mena Massoud would star as Aladdin while Power Rangers actress Naomi Scott will play Princess Jasmine. Will Smith and Marwan Kenzari have also been cast as Genie and Jafar respectively.
Prince Anders is a role that’s been created specifically for the upcoming movie and while no additional details have been provided, Magnusson’s Anders joins another original character in the film, one of Jasmine’s handmaidens named Mara. Mara will be played by Saturday Night Live alum Nasim Pedrad.
This new role isn’t Magnussen’s first turn as a Disney prince. The Tony-nominated actor played Rapunzel’s prince in Into the Woods where he sang a duet with Chris Pine, a history that will help the actor. Ritchie previously confirmed that the live-action Aladdin will be a musical.
In addition to his previous prince experience, Magnussen has also appeared in Stephen Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies as well as the FX series American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson where he played Kato Kaelin.
Aladdin is the latest live-action remake for Disney, following Beauty and the Beast which was in theaters earlier this year. At this time, no release date has been provided for Aladdin.
