While the Internet has whipped itself into a frenzy over seemingly-debunked rumors that Johnny Depp will play Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme in an upcoming film adaptation of Doctor Strange, The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit tweeted that the film may not be as far along as fans assume it is, given the something like two years of rumors swirling around the production. According to Kit, the film is basically starting over from scratch, with no usable script and the concept out to writers to start over. That would be a reversal of course for Marvel, as ComicBook.com heard some time ago that there was a script in place.

Our source told ComicBook.com that the script they've read had seen some rewrites, but that nothing seemed too out of the ordinary at the time. Still, the source conceded, they have "seen some different names floating around, and I don't know which [script] is which" and whether the one our source is aware of might have been scratched in the last couple of months. Work was still ongoing on that version of the film in fall 2013. Whatever the case, Marvel is keen to make sure they get this one just right: the character is viewed as a lynchpin who will play a role in a number of future stories, so the actor is likely to be signed to a multi-picture deal, as is standard with Marvel.
