While Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them premiered back in November, the film’s characters and world-building have stuck with fans in the months since. One character in particular is Percival Graves (Colin Farrell), who was [spoiler alert] revealed to be more than meets the eye in the film’s third act.

Graves unmasked late in the film, revealing himself to really be the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). Many fans theorized that this masquerade had been done through the help of a Polyjuice Potion, which would pose some interesting questions as to the fate of the real Graves. In the world of Harry Potter, a Polyjuice Potion is only successful if the person you are impersonating is still alive, which could hint that the Graves could possibly reappear in one of the planned Fantastic Beasts sequels.
According to Farrell, however, there’s a chance that Graves’ fate was not as uplifting. When asked about it by MTV at Las Vegas’ CinemaCon, Farrell offered a pretty morose take on what happened to the real version of his character.
“Maybe he’s buried in a shallow grave,” Farrell suggested, “and he’s going to die of starvation 17 hours after the film ends.”
Given what Farrell has said in the past about him returning to the franchise, this answer shouldn’t be too surprising. The actor has openly admitted that his appearance in Fantastic Beasts was meant to be a one-off, as that was the way his portrayal was written.
“It was always written that [that first film] was it,” he explained.
In the meantime, Farrell has moved on to other projects, including having a role in one of Warner Bros. most highly-anticipated properties: Justice League. While it’s still unclear what character he could be playing, we have a few DC Comics roles already in mind.
