‘Happy Death Day’ Beats ‘Blade Runner 2049’ At The Box Office

Another horror movie seems set to take the top spot at the box office in 2017 as Happy Death Day pulls away from its box office competition.

The latest from Blumhouse Films will earn $26.5 million in its opening weekend from 3,149 locations. That’s beating early predictions of a $15-20 million opening for the horror movie.

Happy Death Day earned $11.6 million on Friday, including $1 million from early Thursday screenings. The film puts a horror twist on the Groundhog Day plot by forcing a woman played by Jessica Rothe to relive the day she dies over and over again.

This is the third hit this year for Blumhouse. In January, the studio launched M. Night Shyamalan’s secret Unbreakable sequel Split to a $40 million opening and $278.3 million box office total. The very next month, Jordan Peel’s Get Out opened to critical acclaim, a $33.4 million first weekend box office, and eventually a $253.1 million box office total.

Blade Runner 2049, which won last weekend’s box office despite disappointing opening returns, slides into the second place spot this weekend. The film, which cost $150 million to make, earned $15.1 million in its second frame, bringing its box office total to about $60 million.

Action movie The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan, opens in the third place spot with $12.8 million from 2,515 locations. The film’s Friday box office was $4.7 million. The Foreigner, which co-stars Pierce Brosnan, has been well-received by audiences and, with its smallish $35 million budget, has already turned a profit with $88 million from outside of North America.

It remains in the top five in its sixth week at the box office, this time finding itself in fourth place with a $6 million weekend., bringing its box office total to $315 million.

Idris Elba and Kate Winslet’s romantic survival movie The Mountain Between Us rounds out the top five this week with a $5.7 million weekend.

Now, the frightened young woman must relive the same day over and over until she figures out who murdered her.

Happy Death Day is directed by Christopher B. Landon and written by Scott Lobdell. The film stars Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard.

Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. Blade Runner 2049 is the sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner. The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. In addition to Gosling and Ford, the film stars Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto.

Quan is a humble London businessman whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love — his teenage daughter — dies in a senseless act of politically motivated terrorism. His relentless search to find the terrorists leads to a cat-and-mouse conflict with a British government official whose own past may hold the clues to the identities of the elusive killers.

The Foreigner is directed by Martin Campbell and written by David Marconi, based on the 1992 novel The Chinaman by Stephen Leather. The film stars Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan, Charlie Murphy, Michael McElhatton, Orla Brady, Liu Tao and Katie Leung
