The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown exponentially since it first began with Iron Man in 2008, accommodating an ever-expanding list of Marvel characters. Adapting the colossal Marvel Universe into a live-action continuity is a massive undertaking, and it has taken several years and many varied projects in order for the MCU to achieve its current success. However, the MCU has not yet finished growing, and with practically every new release, the shared universe sees new Marvel characters introduced or teased for future projects. Unfortunately, not all of these Marvel movie and TV show teases have paid off in the way that fans have hoped.

The TV shows and movies of the MCU have, on many occasions, established a character within the franchise only to then neglect them. This is most prevalent in the MCU’s post-credits scenes, which are often used to tease future developments within the franchise, introducing new characters in the process. However, several of the characters established within the MCU seem destined not to return any time soon, leading to multiple MCU characters we likely won’t yet see for years.
7) Blade

After being introduced via a voice cameo in Eternals‘ post-credits scene in 2021, Mahershala Ali’s Blade movie has been repeatedly delayed. After it was announced that the acclaimed actor had been cast to play Marvel’s iconic vampire hunter, production on his MCU movie has stalled on multiple occasions, with the latest update indicating that the project doesn’t seem to be high on Marvel Studios’ list of priorities. Though Ali’s casting was a popular choice, it would seem that his character isn’t set to make his first formal appearance for some time yet.
6) Betty Ross

After being introduced into the franchise in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross appeared to have been completely forgotten within the MCU. She finally made her long-awaited return in Captain America: Brave New World, where she appeared only briefly. Despite Betty Ross being confirmed as still present in the MCU, no plans to bring her back have been announced or even teased. Though there are many great narrative avenues to be explored for the character, it doesn’t seem that audiences will see her again for a few years, at least.
5) Black Knight

Another story teased by the post-credits scene of Eternals was that of the Black Knight, indicating his return in Eternals 2 or potentially in his own solo project. Dane Whitman was played by Game of Thrones alum Kit Harrington in Eternals, with the movie’s ending teasing that he will become the Black Knight within the MCU. Sadly, with plans for an Eternals sequel seemingly stalled, it seems that the character has been placed on the back burner for the time being, with no return as yet announced.
4) Eros

Eternals made a point of setting up multiple future MCU stories, though the franchise has yet to deliver on any of them. Another character introduced in the 2021 movie’s post-credits scene was Eros, played by Harry Styles. The brother of Thanos is a powerful hero whose arrival caused quite a stir, though he has yet to be listed as appearing in any future MCU projects. It’s unclear exactly when audiences are likely to see Eros again, as, exciting though the character may be, he doesn’t seem to factor into the final stages of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
3) T’Challa II

The question of how the MCU would deal with the void left by Chadwick Boseman’s passing was a complex one, with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s ending introducing the young son of the late hero T’Challa. Introduced as a future successor for his father, the character is unlikely to make a return any time soon for reasons relating to the MCU’s timeline. Short of jumping ahead considerably in time, the franchise will need to wait a few years at minimum to convincingly reintroduce the character as the new Black Panther, so audiences aren’t likely to see T’Challa II for some time yet.
2) Moon Knight

Moon Knight’s MCU debut has grown to seem somewhat bittersweet, as the intriguing depiction of the hero has since been overshadowed by the poor handling of his future. Though the MCU TV show Moon Knight was relatively popular, Oscar Isaac’s version of the hero seems unlikely to return to the franchise in the near future. The indication is that Disney currently has no plans to make Moon Knight season two, and that Oscar Isaac’s return to the role does not seem to be on the cards before the end of the Multiverse Saga.
1) Hercules

Thor: Love and Thunder‘s post-credits scene marked the MCU debut of Hercules, introducing him as a rival for Thor in the franchise’s future. Despite being one of the most powerful MCU heroes introduced since Avengers: Endgame, Hercules doesn’t seem to be returning to the MCU any time soon. No plans for a follow-up to Love and Thunder have been formally announced, and Brett Goldstein’s reprisal of the role has not been mentioned by anyone involved. Although Hercules is one of the most exciting additions to the franchise in some time, it seems that fans will have to wait to see him again.
