There hasn’t been a new Star Wars movie since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but that’s about to change in the near future. Kicking off a new film slate for Lucasfilm is director Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, which hits theaters next summer. As the title suggests, the movie is a continuation of the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian, following the titular characters as they embark on their latest adventure. In typical Lucasfilm fashion, much about The Mandalorian & Grogu has been kept under wraps, but now the curtain has been peeled back a bit. At long last, the movie’s first official trailer is now available to watch online.

The official Star Wars YouTube channel shared the Mandalorian & Grogu trailer today, giving fans a taste of what they can expect next May. Additionally, an official plot synopsis has been released. It reads, “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu (as himself).” Check out the trailer and a poster in the space below:

The Mandalorian & Grogu Trailer Confirms Rumors About the Movie
This first look at The Mandalorian & Grogu is very much of the teaser variety, meaning it’s more about establishing the overall tone and vibe of the film than establishing the overarching plot. It consists of various out-of-context shots and action beats, including an intriguing look at what appears to be a grown-up Rotta the Hutt. Late last year, it was reported The Bear star Jeremy Allen White had signed on to voice Rotta, who can seemingly be seen in the trailer participating in some kind of gladiator competition, soaking up adoration from spectators. It looks like Hutts will play a key role in The Mandalorian & Grogu; the two on the poster could be The Twins that were featured in The Book of Boba Fett.
If that is indeed Rotta, it would lend credence to another rumor about The Mandalorian & Grogu: the bounty hunter Embo is holding Rotta captive, and Din Djarin goes on a mission to rescue him. Embo is not present in the trailer, but with Rotta seemingly confirmed, there could be truth to Embo’s involvement. What’s interesting about that potential storyline is the heavy presence of the New Republic and Imperial remnants in The Mandalorian & Grogu. Sigourney Weaver plays an experience fighter pilot who fought with the Rebellion and now serves the New Republic. She’s the one who seems to give Din his mission. We also see Zeb fighting stormtroopers in a hallway.
In the original trilogy, Jabba the Hutt was a threat separate from the Empire, but Star Wars canon has repeatedly highlighted the complex relationships and dynamics the various warring factions in the galaxy have with the criminal underworld. As the New Republic looks to establish itself amidst the continued activity of “Imperial warlords,” brokering some kind of deal with the Hutts (be it for permission to use hyperspace lanes for transportation, stake claim to territory, or other reasons) could be vital to their operations. Hiring outside help in the way of Din Djarin could be the best option; as a bounty hunter, Djarin knows the ins and outs of the galactic underworld and is best-suited for this kind of work. If the Imperials are working with Embo to hold Rotta hostage, the Hutts would be willing to provide the New Republic protection in exchange for getting him back.
It will be interesting to see if The Mandalorian & Grogu is a triumphant return for Star Wars movies. The Mandalorian is Disney+’s flagship series, but Season 3 received a much more mixed reception than the first two, which could make the movie a tougher sell for some viewers. We’ve also seen Marvel struggle with movies that were follow-ups to TV shows, highlighting the dangers and risks of cross-media shared universes. Something like The Mandalorian & Grogu requires some homework on the part of audiences to catch up. Still, this will be the first new Star Wars movie in seven years, suggesting Lucasfilm has high hopes for it. The studio is looking to bring Star Wars back to the big screen in a major way (Star Wars: Starfighter is currently in production), so it’s important Mandalorian & Grogu is a hit. Right now, it looks like it could be a classic, fun summer blockbuster.
