This Horror Movie Has a Hilarious Title, But Marvel Fans Should Watch It Anyway

Horror probably isnโ€™t the first thing Marvel fans think of when they talk about the MCU, but it should be this Halloween season. As fans await the releases of anticipated Marvel movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a horror film that just hit streaming should be at the top of their watchlists. The movie, a fairy tale with an action horror twist, started streaming as streaming services padded their libraries in September with horror movies just in time for Halloween.

The movie in question is Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and it started streaming on Paramount+ on September 1st. The film, written and directed by Tommy Wirkola, was released in theaters in 2013, two years after its lead, Jeremy Renner, made his MCU debut as Hawkeye with a cameo in Thor. In the film, Renner stars opposite Gemma Arterton as the fairy tale siblings Hansel and Gretel. Set 15 years after they defeated the witch who planned to eat them, Hansel and Gretel are now grown up and work as skilled bounty hunters who take down witches.

Why You Should Watch Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

We wonโ€™t lie, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters isnโ€™t a good movie, and it certainly wonโ€™t make it onto any โ€œtop 10 best moviesโ€ lists. In fact, the film is downright bad. But those words and the filmโ€™s 17% criticsโ€™ score on Rotten Tomatoes shouldnโ€™t keep you from watching it. For all of its faults, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is incredibly entertaining and a perfect turn-your-brain-off-and-just-enjoy type of film.

The movie is non-stop over-the-top action from start to finish, delivering a solid action-adventure film amid a dark fairy tale setting brought to life with great special effects. The movie prioritizes fun and action over depth and is non-stop over-the-top action from start to finish, delivering a solid action-adventure film amid a dark fairy tale setting of witches and trolls brought to life with great special effects. Renner and Arterton have great on-screen chemistry and bring a fun and believable brother-sister dynamic to the film, with Rennerโ€™s grumpy Hansel balancing the high-energy and badass heroine of Artertonโ€™s Gretel. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is the perfect film to turn on when you just want to sit back and have some ridiculously stupid fun.
