Like every important character in pop culture today, the leaders of the ape army from the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes film are getting the Funko Pop! treatment.

The film, coming from Matt Reeves (who will go on to direct DC’s The Batman with Ben Affleck as the titular hero), will arrive this summer with a number of monkeys taking on major roles in a war against Woody Harrelson‘s Colonel character. War for the Planet of the Apes follows up the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Rise of the Planet of the Apes films which came before it in the franchise.

For now, only two characters have been treated to the Pop! figure release party.

Caesar

The first character, unsurprisingly and completely necessarily, is Caesar.

Caesar is the leader of the Ape army. Previously, Caesar only wanted peace between humans and apes. The previous installments of the Apes franchise have made it clear that this is an all but unattainable goal. While some apes and some humans have managed to co-exist, they are quick to become hostile and betray one another.

Caesar is played by Andy Serkis, who reprises the role for the third time and operating the impressive WETAย studio which creates many of the visual effects which have helped defined the modernย take on the Planet of the Apes saga.ย

The shotgun seen in Caesar’s hand will become one of his primary weapons in the third Apes film.ย

Maurice

The other ape becoming a Funko Pop! figure is Maurice.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, Maurice serves as the big-hearted ape. In one particular scene screened for fans at New York Comic Con, Maurice is with a small group of apes when they discover a young human girl hiding away in a house near a beach. While Caesar and the other apes are reluctant to carry a human with them, Maurice insists that leaving her behind would be wrong.

Every film needs a moral compass. In War for the Planet of the Apes‘ case, it appears that Maurice will be the bridge between apes and humans. Maurice is played by Karin Konoval.ย
