Enormous $500 Million Zombie Hit Just Started Streaming on Multiple Different Services (And One of Them is Free)

Despite seeming to be one of the most popular horror sub-genres around, zombie movies have never really been smash hits at the box office. There have definitely been undead winners from time to time, with films like Dawn of the Dead and Zombieland crossing $100 million globally. However, there is one true smash hit from the world of zombies, making more than $500 million back in 2013 and cementing itself as a fan-favorite in the years since. That movie just landed on multiple different streaming services, including a popular free platform, making it easier to access than ever before.

World War Z, the Brad Pitt-starring zombie blockbuster, was released in theaters back in 2013 and immediately established itself as an enormous hit. Marc Forster’s globe-trotting zombie adventure grossed more than $540 million at the box office, making it the genre’s all-time biggest release. Now, as fans continue to beg for a sequel to the film, World War Z has become one of the most accessible titles in streaming, with Hulu, Tubi, and Paramount+ all getting in on the action.

Paramount+ has been the most common streaming home for World War Z, which makes sense given that the film was a Paramount release. It’s also part of the ongoing Paramount Scares lineup, having been included in the Paramount Scares Vol. 2 4K collection. While seeing the film on Hulu is certainly exciting for that service’s subscriber base, the real win here is World War Z appearing on Tubi’s lineup. This makes the blockbuster completely free to stream, which could help its fan base grow even more, and potentially add to the case for its sequel.

Is World War Z 2 Ever Happening?

Fans have been asking for a sequel to World War Z ever since the first film was released, and you’d think the massive box office showing would’ve demanded an instant follow up. But the budget on the film was very high and Brad Pitt obviously has a busy schedule, so things never totally materialized.

A sequel was originally announced in 2015, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director JA Bayona attached to direct, with a script from Steven Knight. When that fell through, longtime Pitt collaborator and thriller auteur David Fincher was supposed to take over. Neither of those versions ever happened, unfortunately.

All that to say, there is still hope for another World War Z. David Ellison, the head of the newly merged Paramount Skydance Corporation, was an executive producer on the first World War Z and has mentioned the company getting back into more horror. Last month, he specifically mentioned the World War Z sequel as something that was still “on the table” for the studio. After years of delays and problems, we’ll see if that actually comes to fruition this time around.
