Dredd 3D Comic Book Sequel

Despite an underwhelming performance at the box office (especially in the U.S.), Dredd 3D earned itself quite a few accolades and a number of very passionate fans. It's been a consistently strong seller on DVD and Blu-ray since its release in January and there are more than 6,000 members of a Facebook group pressuring Lionsgate to make a sequel to the Karl Urban-starring actioner. ComicBook.com called it the best comic book movie of 2012, saying "If Die Hard and Sin City had an awesome, brilliant, violent baby, this film would be it." Well, after a Reddit AMA in which one of the producers essentially told them that hopes for a sequel were a lost (if admirable) cause, IGN now has the news that a sequel is coming in comic book form. Including the image at right, the website writes, "While we'll have more details in the coming months leading to San Diego Comic-Con, it seems like a pretty safe bet that there will be some sort of comic book continuation of last year's cult-favorite action flick." Certainly, the image is a take on the costume from the film, which is pretty easily distingushible from Dredd's comic book uniform. What might be interesting is the prospect of a motion comic--something they did with the film's comic book prequel--which would give fans a low-cost, no-frills sequel they could burn and plug into their DVD player. Dredd 3D was initially envisioned as the first part of a trilogy, the second and third of which would draw more elements from the character's comic book roots into the film universe. Whether a prospective sequel comic will use those stories or come up with something new entirely isn't immediately clear.
